Apple Tree Project

In April 2019 we started the apple tree project for Lutindi. Apples are a very expensive foodstuff in Tanzania and therefore we decided to start this project on our own.
For the Primary School we ordered 24 apple trees (in three different varieties), which were planted on the school grounds at the beginning of August 2019. In addition, another 6 trees were planted on the premises of the Lutindi Mental Hospital, one of our most important local cooperation partners. Not only the whole village was on its feet on the planting day. Regional politicians from Korogwe and important public figures came to attend the planting campaign.

After the first planting had started well and all trees had survived the storm at the end of 2019, we ordered 60 more trees, almost all of which found a tree sponsor from the MSV Duisburg fans. In total, 50 more trees of different species could be planted on the grounds of the primary school and 10 trees on the grounds of the Lutindi Mental Hospital. The later harvest is intended to serve as an important food supplement for the pupils and patients of the hospital.
In addition, this project also has an educational aspect, as the children will take over the personal tree sponsorships (care, irrigation, harvesting) in agreement between us and the local school management. Keyword responsibility! Lutindi is therefore one of the very few locations in Tanzania where apple trees have been planted. In a few years a stately grove will be standing here.

The pictures of both planting campaigns speak for themselves.

But it was not as easy as the project sounds. First, varieties had to be found that do not require a frost period for annual flowering and thus fruit formation. But frost and snow in the Tanzanian Usambara mountains are not what one finds climatically there.

In Europe, we did not find any in the search for such varieties. In California, however, there is a nursery that specializes in breeding suitable and sufficiently resistant trees for the tropics and subtropics.

With Kevin, owner of the California nursery “Kuffel Creek”, we made contact with our current Tanzanian supplier “Tamu Tamu Apple”. “Tamu Tamu Apple” clarified the ideal blend of climates in the Usambara Mountains. Our ZAC founding member Martin Osing, himself a horticulturist, helped us ask the right questions at “Tamu Tamu Apple”.

Our colleague, Ombeni, attended a two-day training course at the Tanzanian tree nursery shortly before delivery to teach him the basics of planting and cultivating apple trees.
The ZAC e.V. was able to find a tree sponsor for each apple tree to refinance this special project, to whom we are very attached for their donation.

Single Mother Cooperation Lutindi

At the beginning of 2019, in consultation with the municipality of Lutindi, we founded a community agricultural cooperative for the benefit of single mothers, to whom we provided land parcels on our 90,000 m² property for their own cultivation.

For this purpose, ZAC provided the women with seeds and the necessary equipment as well as rubber boots for field work. The preliminary planned costs were around 3,000 euros. As of May 2019, around 2,100 euros had already been collected via MSV Duisburg fans on the MSV Portal and commercial donors from food retailers. The difference was provided from own funds.

The aim was to enable the single mothers, who otherwise could not provide for the family’s livelihood due to their personal situation, to grow food for themselves and sell harvest surpluses on the market. The harvest surpluses sold are intended to help the women lead a more self-determined life and enable their children to attend school. Again, “helping people to help themselves” is the guiding principle.

We were supported by our founding member Martin Osing and his network with regard to sensible seeds, cultivation methods, crop rotations and soil optimization. And all this within the framework of ecologically sensible, purely organic cultivation for healthy nutrition and with educational added value for the region.

After joining the project, the women immediately began clearing and reclamation of the land provided, as well as the first sowing.  However, the fall of 2019 undid all the work, as severe storms destroyed all the sowing. Here, too, climate change is clearly noticeable.

But the women were not discouraged at all and cultivated the fields anew. With great success. The harvest was very abundant and rewarded the persistence and efforts of the single mothers. Moreover, the success is an incentive to continue the work. Thus, a sustainable project could be completed.

In February 2021, this initiative was officially recognized by the district government and officially registered under the number HWK/2021/KIKUNDI/KE/0672 as “C.B.R.O.  Single Mother Cooperation Lutindi”. This means that the women’s work is officially recognized and they have the opportunity to open their own account and thus also gain access to small loans.

Big Christmas party in Lutindi
The already traditional ZAC Christmas party in Lutindi has been given a new frame. For the first time, in addition to the regional supporters of the project, all children of the primary school were also invited, and many accepted the invitation. Our Tanzanian NGO “C.B.R.O.” had prepared everything perfectly, rented a hall, provided drinks and food and put together a nice supporting program for young and old. People danced, sang, prayed and celebrated Christmas together. To be continued.

Heavy Thunderstorms in the Usambara Mountains
The heavy rains people can remember in and around Lutindi have claimed lives from October to November 2019, causing major damage to the region’s infrastructure.
Mudslides, rockfalls, destroyed crops and impassable roads have led to much suffering and problems. Our projects are affected as well. The road we built to our property was washed away along its entire length and has to be rebuilt. The harvests for the single mothers on our specially provided plots are destroyed (Cultivation Project). Also on the sports field have incurred great damage. The main traffic route high in the Usambara Mountains is completely destroyed and when this will be re-usable, is not yet clear. Climate change and its consequences have also arrived in Tanzania.

Apple tree project completed
In the middle of July, our employee Ombeni was trained at the nursery “Tamu Tamu Apples” in Iringa, about 600 km away. Here everything worth knowing about apple trees was brought to him.
In early August 2019, a total of 30 trees were delivered and planted at the Primary School Lutindi and at Lutindi Mental Hospital. Many helping hands and key political figures attended the first planting of apple trees in the Usambara Mountains on this day. Thanks to all tree sponsors. This completes the project. Annual General Meeting of the ZAC e.V.
On 18.06.2019 this year’s ZAC Annual General Meeting was held in the rooms of the ev. Gemeindehaus on Magdalenenstrasse in Duisburg-Beek.
The Executive Board reported on the results of the financial year 2018 and was unanimously discharged from the general meeting. The motion to amend the statutes was also unanimously approved. The JHV’s official minutes can be found under the heading “Transparency / Fiscal Year 2018”. After the JHV there were two very interesting picture lectures. Markus Visser and Caro reported on their Tanzania trip and the visit to Lutindi and Georg Terbeck gave in his lecture insights into the work of the Lutindi travel delegation of HSBK-Oberhausen.

Clean drinking water for Lutindi
The Grafschafter Lions Club Moers (GLCM) donated us at the end of May 2019 as a donation in kind a so-called PAUL system (Portable Aqua Unit for Lifesaving). PAUL is a patented water treatment system that uses patented nano-membrane technology to filter out viruses, bacteria and minute dirt particles from contaminated water, turning contaminated water into the best drinking water.
In June 2019, PAUL went on a journey to Lutindi, where it will primarily be used at the local elementary school, but will also supply drinking water to the entire population of Lutindi. So far, drinking water was taken from the local stream, which often led to severe diarrheal diseases of children and other residents. Thanks to the GLCM donation, this is now a thing of the past.

C.B.R.O. CEO Zakaria Mnkai in Germany
We met the Chairman of the Board of our Tanzanian NGO, Zakrai Mnkai, during his one-week stay in Wuppertal at the United Evangelical Mission, which has its headquarters there. At the VEM he is working as a program reference for Africa. The given information from Zakaria brought us many valuable impulses and insights, which we can incorporate in our work. Especially in the administrative processes in Tanzania and here especially in the approach to projects in collaboration with the community Lutindi.

Apple tree project started
We have ordered a total of 30 organic apple trees from a Tanzanian specialist nursery, which will be planted in Lutindi in July of this year. Of these, a total of 24 trees will be placed in a mix of 3 different varieties on the grounds of the Primary School in Lutindi and 6 trees on the grounds of Lutindi Mental Hospital.
These sweet fruits of the apple trees bred specifically for the tropics and subtropics are to serve the children of the Primary School as an important nutritional supplement and also have an educational added value in that the children later take care of the trees themselves. The apples of the trees, which are later moved to Lutindi Mental Hospital, are intended for the patients.

Dipl.-Bauing. Georg Terbeck, teacher at HSBK-Oberhausen, Markus Karrenberg and Steffen Mölder (both technical students at HSBK) flew together with our ZAC activist Si-yeun Hammerbacher to Tanzania for a week on 17.02.2019 to do some accompanying work on the ZAC project continue. The building site was re-measured, trees worth protecting were located and thus firmly marked and there was a basic decision on which part of the area in the future, the buildings of the future children’s village to be built. The collected data is converted into 3D map material and made available to the ZAC. After the trip, HSBK is planning the two tourist lodges as part of a project week.

ZAC participates in the Open House of HSBK Oberhausen
Like last year, the ZAC e.V. participated with an information booth at this year’s open-house of the Hans Sachs Berufskolleg Oberhausen, our most important cooperation partner in all technical questions concerning our construction project. Here, interesting discussions could be held and important contacts made.
In the middle of February 2019, a delegation of HSBK will fly to Tanzania on our behalf to carry out on site in Lutindi important groundwork of a technical nature for our construction project.

Soil Test completed

At the beginning of this year, the necessary Soil test (soil assessment) was prepared by the state-owned TanRoad. The soil survey provides clarity on the geological features of the subsoil even before the start of construction and is thus a reassurance for builders. An important prerequisite for the preparation of a soil survey is the knowledge of the exact locations of the later buildings. By means of core drilling, samples were taken at various points of our building plot, from which the expert can make statements about the bearing capacity of the subsoil and the water conditions.

Start of construction sports field Lutindi
After the villagers had already diverted a creek into a joint venture on the site of the future sports field, the ordered bulldozer moved in just before Christmas to pitch the field. The remaining fine work will again be done on an honorary basis by the inhabitants of the village.

11/2018
Soil test finished
The required soil survey for our construction project was prepared on 28.11.2018 and 29.11.2018 by the state TanRoad (Tanzania National Roads Agency) on our building plot. The soil survey provides clarity on the geological features of the subsoil even before the start of construction and is therefore a reinsurance for us.
In order to create a soil survey, it is necessary to know exactly where the later buildings should be. The soil samples are taken by means of core drilling, from which the expert can make statements on the bearing capacity of the substrate and the water conditions.

“Umbele” becomes “Angaza”
Some attentive readers may already have noticed: The name for our planned children’s village has changed. The name “Angaza Children’s Village Lutindi” has now been changed from “Umbele Village” by board decision. In the future, it will also be used in all official documents that become necessary during project development. We have chosen the new name of the Children’s Village from a variety of proposals that our Tanzanian partner C.B.R.O. had developed. “Angaza” means translated from Swahili into English, as much as “lighten up”, to lighten up in German. Very suitable for our project, which wants to set bright spots in the lives of disadvantaged children. And also easy to speak and write in English and German.

Contract signed with MeTL
After more than two years of intensive dialogue with the landowner, the MeTL-Group / Daressalam, a final version of the property for the construction of the children’s village on the 45,000 m² site in the Usambara Mountains was closed. Registration in the basic register has already been initiated. A show of strength for both partners.

Visit from Tanzania
Florence Paulo Shemndolwa, member of the C.B.R.O. board team from Lutindi / Tanzania, is visiting Germany. Reason enough for a joint meeting, which we had arranged in the Innenhafen Duisburg. There was a lot to talk about at a dinner together with our consultant Si-yeun Hammerbacher. For Flora and us, it was the first personal encounter and we can say that we were immediately captivated by her serene and friendly personality. Flora has made it very clear to us which outstanding significance the ZAC project has for Lutindi and his environment. She even speaks a few words of German, but understands more than she can speak. We were able to learn a lot more about the country and its people and were able to discuss details of our project. We did not want to let Flora drive back to Lutindi without a MSV shirt and gave her one as a small gift. We will not forget this evening so soon.

Copper money collection campaign 2017/2018 a great success
MSV fans collected copper coins for the children’s village project and again proved their passion for collecting. In the end, a good 200 kg of copper coins worth EURO 1,542.07 were counted by S-Cash Logistics in Mülheim / Ruhr and exchanged into hard currency. S cash logistics rounded up to EUR 1,700. In addition, cash donations of the copper money campaign EURO 878.00 went into the bank account of ZAC, so that the action brought in a total of EUR 2,578.00 for the children’s village project, specifically for the construction of the village meeting point. Great.

The collection campaign 2018/2019 has already started.

Completion of the C.B.R.O. office in Lutindi
One of the editions of the Tanzanian Authority was the presence of an official bureau for our NGO “C.B.R.O.” With the Lutheran Church, which owns a room in Lutindi Mental Hospital, a solution could be found quickly and easily. For the equivalent of € 3.75 a month we were given a room, which had to be renovated. The renovation was voluntarily taken over by our Tanzanian NGO board, the renovation materials were taken over by the Lutheran church.

Constituent meeting of the CBRO board
Following the founding of the Tanzanian ZAC-NGO Children Base Reinforcement Organization, CBRO’s new board met in mid-February 2018 for its inaugural meeting and also made the first decisions.

Not on the picture is board member Zakaria Mnkai (also Lutindi Mental Hospital), who was currently sent by the Bethel organization to a congress in Germany (Wuppertal). The number of board members of a Tanzanian NGO was given to us by the responsible state authority.
The first step was to create a Tanzanian account with the CRDB bank in nearby Korogwe, so that we do not always have to allocate small individual amounts, which are then expensive in terms of fees. As the official postal address, the CBRO, such a further decision, the address of the Lutindi Mental Hospital is given, in which we will have our own room.

Tanzanian ZAC NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) was founded
After long preparations, the ZAC e.V. received the certificate of incorporation from the Ministry of Community Development, Gender and Children on 19.01.2018. Thus, the way is clear for the statutory project of the ZAC e.V. in Tanzania, to build a children’s village in the Usambara Mountains in the village community Lutindi. The legally binding contract between the newly founded “CHILDREN BASE REINFORCEMENT ORGANIZATION”, the name of the Tanzanian ZAC subsidiary, and the MeTL Group, which provided the 45,000 m² building plot, can now finally be implemented.

Annual report fiscal year 2018 (January 01th, 2016 to December 31st, 2018)

Annual report fiscal year 2018 (January 1st, 2018 to December 31st, 2018)

At the center of all activities, and thus the focus for the 2018 financial year, was the founding of a Tanzanian NGO as the basis for all future legal transactions in Tanzania. In particular, for the final contractual arrangement with the MeTL Group on the lease of the building plot in the Usambara Mountains in an area of 45,000 m², which would not be possible without an NGO.

January 2018
On 19.01.2018 the ZAC founded the Tanzanian NGO (Non Governmental Organization) in the state ministry of Community Development, Gender and Children as a general requirement for the construction of a children’s village in Tanzania as well as all other legal transactions. The NGO was registered as a “Children Base Reinforcement Organization”, short form “C.B.R.O.” based in Lutindi / Tanga.

February 2018
The ZAC board took part in an open-house of the Hans-Sachs-Berufskolleg (HSBK) in Oberhausen and presented the results of the cooperation with the HSBK to an interested audience, especially those from the working trip of a HSBK delegation Lutindi in November 2017.

March 2018
The ZAC e.V. opens its own Facebook account in order to reach even more people in addition to its own Internet presence and to increase the chances of further members, supporters or property sponsors. In the same month the C.B.R.O. in Tanzania also has its own Facebook account.

April 2018
The ZAC homepage is now bilingual and will be available in English later. In the next step, the option of choosing the third language, Swahili, is planned.

April 2018
The ZAC e.V. founded with the C.B.R.O. as a project ambassador a football team of its own, consisting of a first and a second team, which in the future under the name “C.B.R.O. LUTINDI FC ” will play games against other regional Tanzanian teams. A total of 25 players from the 5 villages of the village community Lutindi were selected for their own two teams at a separate viewing day in Lutindi. The C.B.R.O. LUTINDI FC has been officially registered.

June 2018
One of the requirements of founding our Tanzanian NGO was the presence of a physical office. We were able to reach an agreement with the Tanzanian Evangelical Lutheran Church on the renting of a space that is appropriate and sufficient for our purposes in the premises of the Lutindi Mental Hospital. For the equivalent of € 3.75 per month, we rented this space on a long-term basis, renovated it ourselves and equipped it with the necessary operational facilities. A table, two chairs, some paint and some office utensils have barely charged in terms of cost.

June 2018
The ZAC e.V. was once again awarded the Town & Country Foundation Prize this year, which was endowed with a donation of € 1,000.00.

June 2018
The 12-month collection campaign of copper coins, which expired in June 2018, was once again considered a success. Overall, the collection community of fans collected an amount of 1,572.07 euros. The Mülheim S-Cash Logistics has carried out the automatic counting of the coins and their exchange free of charge as every year so also this year. In addition, separate donations totaling 878.00 euros were received as part of this campaign, with the result that the 2017/2018 campaign brought in a total of 2,578.07 euros for the project. In the same month, the copper money campaign 2018/2019 was launched on an enlarged scale. It is now not limited more to the collection of copper money.

August 2018
Meeting with the C.B.R.O. Executive Board member Florence Shemndolwa in Duisburg and intensive exchange on the project and the environment in Lutindi.

September 2018
After lengthy and very difficult negotiations, after two years of discussions and formulations between the Tanzanian MeT-Group, the largest Tanzanian employer and landowner, and us (through our NGO C.B.R.O.), a legally binding contract for the free use of the land for our construction project was concluded. The contract provides for the provision of 45.000m² of building land in Lutindi and describes the terms of use. Registration in the Tanzanian Basic Register has been initiated.

October 2018
The construction of a sports field / football field, planned in our construction phase 3, was brought forward. This sports ground will be on the one hand the C.B.R.O.LUTINDI FC as well as the students of the two schools in Lutindi available (previously not available). This planning has met with a great response from the municipality of Lutindi. The villagers redirected a stream as a preparatory work on the planned area. Fans of the MSV Duisburg have collected in a spontaneous fundraising collection for the necessary, machine straightening of the area required amount of a total of € 1,330.00 (renting a grader).

November 2018
The necessary ground survey was commissioned by the state-owned TanRoad, after a new cost estimate was obtained. The total cost amounted to 1,650.00 euros, which were taken over in full by the Dinslakener engineering and planning office Zühlsdorf in the context of an object sponsorship to 100%.

November 2018
Following a unanimous decision of the Board of Directors, the provisional project name “Umbele Village” was transferred to the final village name “Angaza Children’s Village” (Angaza translates as “bright spots”) proposed by the C.B.R.O. board. This name will be maintained internally and externally in all publications and official documents.

November 2018
ZAC e.V. awarded the order to C.B.R.O for the partial clearing of the heavily smoked building site due to the pending execution of the soil assessment. Accessibility had to be guaranteed. Some Tanzanian day laborers completed the work within 10 days. Total cost around 300.00 euros.

December 2018
The construction of a village sports field was completed as the first major project of the ZAC in Lutindi. As a prelude to the upcoming planing helped the entire village in the laying of a stream. Then the ground level was leveled with a bulldozer. The remaining work will be taken over again by the village community. This will give the two schools of the village and the C.B.R.O. Lutindi FC have their own sports field available.

December 2018
In FY 2018, only 8 new memberships and 1 sponsoring membership were registered. This is a significant decline compared to the previous years.
In total, seven memberships and 48 active memberships have been received by ZAC e.V. since its founding until 31.12.2018. Two resignations of members were recorded in 2018 and thus in total since the founding of the association.
The number of donations also declined significantly compared to 2017 and 2018. This is mainly attributable to the fact that the takeover of property sponsorships, which was too low in 2018, had significantly increased the average donation received in previous years through large individual donations. Here, it is important to lay the main activities and efforts of the entire Executive Board in 2019.
The account balance of the club at the VB Duisburg was reported on December 31, 2017 at 40,984.48 euros and at 31.12.2018 at 45,978.56 euros.

“Euro coins collection rallye”

The loyal collection community PFYC zebras filling the collection 2022.

For all the loyal collectors of copper coins for our project work, we would like to mention the group “PFYC-Zebras”, which is made up of MSV fans and which has also promoted coin collecting in its environment and is active there. Among others, the “Kaufmännische Berufskolleg Walther Rathenau” in Hamborn or the “City administration of Wesel” participated.

But also the colleagues of the public order office of the city of Duisburg have diligently collected coins for the good cause. Chapeau and thank you to all of you.

Chapeau and thank you to all of you.

Small coins – great effect
Think global – act local. This catchy motto also applies to the ZAC, especially when it comes to fundraising for our project in Tanzania. So we also like to make small donations from our immediate vicinity, which can be collected as unbureaucratically as possible. For the ZAC with its hometown of Duisburg that means: in the city and in the region.

Here we collect euro coins of every value, which sometimes inflate so many wallets and are often perceived as annoying in daily payments. Exactly on these little treasures we are keen. After all, many small coins will always end up as valuable euros. “Small cattle are also crap” commented the aptly the vernacular.

Proven idea
We were able to prove that such actions can be surprisingly successful. Already completed group rounds in Duisburg and the surrounding area yielded the following results over the individual years:

Collection season 2017/2018 – result 2.578 euros
Collection season 2018/2019 – result 1.637 euros
Collection season 2019/2020 – result 1.950 euros
Collection season 2021/2011 – result

Finance a building object together
So now the ZAC “Coin Collection Marathon 2021/2022” has been launched, which will end in mid-2022. We had set ourselves the ambitious goal of using the collected coins to finance, among other things, the construction of a roofed village meeting place for the children. 5,000 Euros have been calculated for this in the middle of our children’s village and this amount has been reached in the meantime. As a next goal, we want to finance the necessary materials and wages for the design of the path area in the children’s village amounting to a good 10,000 Euros through this campaign in the course of the coming years.

Anyone in and around Duisburg can take part in this year’s coin collecting marathon. Whether it’s a canning jar, a piggy bank or a tin can – a suitable container can be found at home in no time at all. So start collecting euro coins now, it’s going to add up! Next summer we will have the collected coins professionally sorted and counted. Of course, the ZAC will then provide detailed information here about what has added up.

Coin delivery in city and region
Where then finally with the coins collected at home? Quite simply bring it to our ZAC collection points, which we have listed below and will also complete. There are spacious containers ready for coin insertion, so that you can get rid of weight anytime in between. Everything that lands here by mid-2020 flows directly into our developing children’s village.

Join in! Rally with us for our Children’s Village project!
